Back in Wellington!

I had a good time in Christchurch on the whole, but I am so glad to be a home. I've got the house to myself and I've made pizza, and eaten chocolate and there may have been a tiny bit of passionfruit vodka as well. I am then going to continue my re-watch of Band of Brothers (so good, and hi baby!Damian Lewis) because I am embracing an anti-social New Year's Eve. Whole-heartedly.

2011 has had its ups and downs from earthquakes and broken hometowns, to leaving the UK, to moving back to NZ to everything in between. I think my highlight was my trip to US - one I've been meaning to make since I was small - I want to go back so badly, but I am so grateful I got a chance to see it at all The lowlight is I imagine pretty self-explanatory. Oh, Christchurch.

I kept meaning to do a fandom end-of-year meme and it just never happened.

However, I did just see this general RL end of year meme pop up on my flist:

1. What did you do in 2011 that you'd never done before?

Visited the US, Germany and France. Went on a roller-coaster. Tried Stephen Colbert's AmeriCone Dream. Went to a 3-day, staying in tents music festival. Travelled in business class. Saw David Tennant on stage. Experienced a 6.0 earthquake - thank you December 23. ;)

2. Did you keep your New Year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

I didn't really make any but I have some vague goals for 2012.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

Hmm. Not really close to me, no.

4. Did anyone close to you die?

No, thankfully.

5. What countries did you visit?

France, Netherlands, Germany, United States. I lived in the United Kingdom and New Zealand.

6. What would you like to have in 2012 that you lacked in 2011?

A permanent job. Maybe a boyfriend/girlfriend - though I hesitate to make it an actual-facts goal, because that makes it a little weird to me.

7. What date from 2011 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

22 Feb - Chch Earthquake.
15 June - Left London.
01 July - Returned to NZ.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Successfully finished up my time in the UK, organised a 2 week trip to the US.

9. What was your biggest failure?

I wish I could have travelled more when I was in the UK. Greece, Spain, Italy. *sigh*

Not a big failure, but I really wish I'd seen a baseball game, gone to a taping of the Daily Show and caught up with more fangirls while in the US.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

No, as always, I'm pretty lucky with those things. *crosses everything it continues*

11. What was the best thing you bought?

Plane tickets to New York.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?

Friends, family, Jon Stewart, Alex O'Loughlin. ;)

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

A lot of people. A lot. Too many to name.

14. Where did most of your money go?

Travelling, living, caffeine (oh you think I joke).

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

Travelling, going to the Musuem of Modern Art, walking over the Brooklyn Bridge, going to a taping on Q.I, going on a roller-coaster, a lot of episodes of television.

16. What song will always remind you of 2011?

"Walk" - Foo Fighters. Or the Community theme song which got into my head at any opportunity it possibly could.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:

i. happier or sadder? About the same, I think.

ii. thinner or fatter? About the same, I think.

iii. richer or poorer? Richer - I think, but not by a lot.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?

Travelled, been more organised, worked harder, been more creative.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?

Worried. Been lazy like a very lazy thing.

20. How did you be spend Christmas?

In Christchurch with my parents and brother.

22. Did you fall in love in 2011?

With a ridiculous tv-show and a couple of good ones, yes. With a person, no.

23. How many one-night stands?

This question always amuses me. I don't think I filled this out in the year where I could have answered in the positive. In 2011? None.

24. What was your favorite TV program?

Fringe and Hawaii Five-0 tied. Highly recommended: Homeland, The Daily Show, The Good Wife, Community, Game of Thrones.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

Don't think so.

26. What was the best book you read?

The Hunger Games trilogy - Suzanne Collins

Highly recommended: A Place of Greater Safety - Hilary Mantel.

27. What was your greatest musical (re)discovery?

The Black Keys, Janelle Monae Frank Turner.

I was reminded how much I love Supergrass.

28. What did you want and get?

To see New York City, to see some of my favourite works of art.

29. What did you want and not get?

To see more of Europe. To stay in the UK.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?

X-Men First Class, Beginners, The Apartment -saw it on the flight from LA to Auckland - amazing 1960's movie - cemented my love for Jack Lemmon even further.

(Looking at the full list - I rewatched a lot of movies and didn't see that many in the movie theatre - mostly big budget movies. Hmm).

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

I was 28. I had a couple of drinks with friends at a local pub (Balham Bowls Club - you were awesome). I organised this on the actual day - as I was so sure I wanted to do nothing because it was so close to when I was leaving the UK and I was going to have a leaving party - until I had a eh day at work and wanted a drink. ;)

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

Seeing a taping of the Daily Show. :p No, honestly, reading more books, taking more opportunities, finding a permanent job.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2011?

Same as ever - jeans, geeky t-shirts, sneakers - but I am wearing more dresses. I also have finally embraced jeans that are not bootleg. ;)

34. What kept you sane?

Friends, the internet, television, caffeine.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

If you'd asked me at the start of the year - Joshua Jackson. Then Alex O'Loughlin happened. Goofy, tattoo-ed, sweet and ridiculously good-looking.

Highly commended: Joel McHale, Jon Stewart, Melanie Laurent, Anna Torv, Emma Stone, Evan Rachel Wood, Andrew Garfield.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?

US election/occupy/NZ election.

37. Who did you miss?

Friends in UK and NZ, family.

38. Who was the best new person you met?

I don't know actually.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2011.

Take advantage of things while they're there ... because someday they won't be.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.

Can't think of one at the moment.

I may have watched all of Downton Abbey from S1 through to the Christmas Special while on holiday. Oops? ;) Lots of love. Matthew! Mary! Anna! Sybil! While I adore Matthew/Mary, I also see interesting femslash possibilities. Hmm. Anyway, it's awesome, and Maggie Smith is amazing. <3!

Yuletide must have kick-started my languishing writerly tendencies, because I wrote 350 words of H50 fic earlier today and I still really want to write something about Steve and Jenna because I remain fascinated by their friendship/relationship, and I'm totally going to sign up for picfor1000.

Talking of Yuletide: my recs are on pinboard. Some awesome fic, especially the @mayoremanuel one. That was fucking amazing, and made me order the book mentioned in the notes. Oh, and Blackadder at the Occupy movement - that was genius too.

Downton Abbey!!!! :D I thought I saw your rec on a M/M Yuletide fic. ;) YAY!!! Oh, there's femslash out there, Cora/O'Brien mainly. ;p

It sounds like you had a very full and productive year -- I think that's absolutely amazing. :D You traveled so much and did and saw so many things. :) I'm kind of in awe of you. :p

I hope you'd see that, I've been reading your thoughts on the Christmas Special with interest. I really enjoyed it. :)

Cora/O"Brien? Huh. I mean, I guess. I was thinking more Sybil/Gwen, Mary/Anna. ;)

Aw. Yeah, it's all relative I guess. Compared to some friends I didn't travel a lot so maybe that's why I feel like I could have done more - looking back at it, I did do a lot in 2010. :)

Happy New Years!

Downton Abbey is rather crazy addictive, isn't it?

And lets hear it for quiet New Years (especially when the weather's as crappy as its been, ne?) I spent mine watching Top Gear and reading random m/m novels...^_^
